No Cult Indications in Alleged Murder Conspiracy

Loudoun County [Virginia] Sheriff Steve Simpson has criticized sensational media reports that the stabbing death of 57-year old scientist Robert M. Schwartz has ritualistic or cult-oriented underpinnings. He denied that the letter "X" had been carved into the back of Schwartz's neck and that the killing had "cult overtones." Instead, court documents with law enforcement officials and people close to the three suspects charged with the murder suggest a spur-of-the-moment slaying between the accused and Schwartz — the suspects were all acquaintances of his college-student daughter — that haphazardly veered into a fatal confrontation between the scientist and one of the acquaintances, a possibly psychotic orphan who lost control of himself. (Jon Echtenkamp, Fauqier Times-Democrat, 12/18/01, Internet)
